Kingston Technology is the world's largest independent manufacturer of memory products. With global headquarters located in a six-building campus in Fountain Valley, California, Kingston employs more than 3,000 people worldwide. Kingston has deployed multiple HaulPass millimeter wave wireless radios for disaster recovery and expansion of its campus-wide Ethernet network.

Southern California is known for both seismic activity and extreme weather, so establishing a prudent disaster recovery strategy is an important business consideration for the company. Seasonal heavy rains and flooding are facts of life in Southern California, so Kingston relies on the HaulPass V60s built-in Intelligent Automatic Gain Control technology. This technology maintains network throughput even under the harshest environmental conditions. Unlike other V-Band vendors who adjust to changing environmental conditions by reducing valuable bandwidth, HaulPass V60s links maintain gigabit throughput speeds regardless of extreme weather conditions.

“We installed our second HaulPass link when we leased a new building and needed to link it to our high-speed campus network,” said Flores. “Rather than having to dig trenches and install fiber — or go through the ongoing expense of leasing a fiber-optic circuit from the phone company — we opted to go with a second license-free HaulPass link to connect the new building.” Installing, aligning and configuring the V60s links was a straightforward process: CAT5e cable to the rooftop, pole-mounted units, and the supplied scopes for alignment.

We installed our initial HaulPass V60s wireless link as a redundant datacenter-to-datacenter disaster recovery connection. We have two main datacenters located in separate buildings, connected via underground fiber-optic cable. However, should disaster strike — or something else unexpectedly happen to disrupt our fiber connection — we're fully protected thanks to our rooftop-based, line-of-sight wireless Gigabit Ethernet backup link.

Flawless V-Band performance in extreme weather

Rain or shine, Skycom1 in New Orleans relies on HaulPass V-Band wireless links

Skycom1 is a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) offering fast, reliable, broadband wireless Internet access in the greater New Orleans area. The company specializes in high-speed wireless services for commercial buildings, apartment complexes, hotels, and other businesses. Skycom1 has deployed multiple HaulPass V60s millimeter wave V-Band radio links for building-to-building broadband connectivity.

Extreme weather is a fact of life in New Orleans, particularly when it comes to heavy rainfall. Millimeter wave transmissions can be adversely affected by rain, a concept known as rain fade. Skycom1's HaulPass V60s links were recently exposed to torrential downpours when over 20 inches of rain fell in just three days. At the peak of the violent storm, rain totals exceeded two inches per hour.

HaulPass V60s radios incorporate advanced technology known as Intelligent Automatic Gain Control. With this superior approach, network throughput is maintained even under the harshest environmental conditions.

The HaulPass V60s links performed flawlessly throughout the heavy downpour. Data throughput during the storm never dropped at all. Amazingly, throughput was nearly identical before the storm, during, and after — thanks to the ruggedized enclosure and intelligent AGC.

Fiber Internet Center goes the extra mile with a HaulPass V-Band solution

Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Fiber Internet Center LLC provides high-speed, carrier-grade fiber connectivity solutions exclusively for business customers. Increasingly, the company has encountered business prospects where the closest fiber hub site or “lit building” was just a few hundred meters away from the required business location.

The cost to run additional fiber from an existing fiber hub site to a new customer building can often exceed $100 per foot for underground installations. “The effort and related costs to run a fiber extension includes much more than just the cost of the fiber cable,” said Bob Evans, Founder and CTO of Fiber Internet Center. “Running a fiber extension includes a myriad of costs, including engineering, permits, trench digging, filler removal, running the fiber, and then refilling the trenches.” In addition, there are situations where running a fiber extension is simply not possible, due to right-of-way issues or the need to cross highways, rivers, or other barriers.

Thanks to HaulPass V-Band connectivity, Fiber Internet Center has been able to deploy several new wireless rooftop-to-rooftop fiber extensions for its business customers. Support of full-duplex FDD operation means customers can transmit and receive simultaneously at full GigE speeds.

V-Band wireless link in Mission Viejo, California

City of Mission Viejo connects to the Potocki Conference Center with HaulPass V60s

The Thomas R. Potocki Conference Center in the City of Mission Viejo, California, was originally designed as a training center for the U.S. soccer team during the 1994 World Cup. Located in the middle of Oso Viejo Community Park with adjacent soccer fields, the building was converted by the city to a community center after the World Cup was completed. Today it serves the city as a youth activity and conference center.

The one thing lacking at the facility was broadband Internet access. This was particularly a problem for youth counselors from Outta Bounds Events Inc. who leased the facility, conducting after-school programs and computer classes that required broadband access — to the point of using mobile phones as hot spots for the kids in the programs.

That all changed when Vubiq deployed a HaulPass V60s millimeter wave wireless link to connect the conference center to the central data center at Mission Viejo City Hall, located about 600 meters away. The city had previously investigated alternatives, but the remote location within the park and surrounding soccer fields would have required costly, disruptive trenching and fiber optic cable.

Vubiq Networks provided us with the ideal, cost-effective, license-free wireless solution. City Hall and the Potocki Conference Center are within rooftop line-of-sight proximity, so we were able to easily deploy the HaulPass V60s wireless links on the rooftops of each building. The Potocki Center now has connectivity to the city's network and applications.

Snappy Internet & Telecom deploys 10 Gbps V-Band link

The link spans a building-to-building distance of 290 meters.

Vubiq 10 Gbps E-Band link spans 2.3 km at Cal Poly Pomona

Students exposed to the importance of millimeter wave wireless technology

Vubiq Networks has partnered with California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) to educate students about advanced millimeter wave wireless technology and to foster research and development into extremely high frequency (EHF) telecommunications applications. Vubiq has donated a pair of HaulPass E10g low-latency 10 Gbps radios to the university.

The innovative HaulPass E10g radios communicate over the lightly licensed 80 GHz E-Band spectrum. The wireless link connects Cal Poly Pomona's main campus to the university's Lanterman Campus South, traversing 2.3 km.

Cal Poly Pomona and Ganpat University (GUNI) in India have issued a memorandum of understanding, recognizing that universities need to operate in a global environment of cooperation in the development of educational and technology initiatives for engineering students, faculties and R&D.

Educating university students on millimeter wave wireless technology

Vubiq Networks has partnered with Ganpat University (GUNI) to educate students about innovative millimeter wave wireless technology and foster research and development into extremely high frequency (EHF) telecommunications applications. Vubiq has donated a pair of HaulPass V10g low-latency millimeter wave radios — the first and only 10 Gbps V-Band wireless link in the industry — to the university.

Located in North Gujarat in western India, Ganpat University is one of the most respected not-for-profit universities in the country. GUNI has successfully implemented a strong industry-academia linked higher education model and empowered its students through hands-on learning, exposure to industry, and enhanced employability.

GUNI is the only academic institution in India to have been issued an experimental license for testing millimeter wave technology from the Department of Telecommunication of the Government of India. GUNI has also been invited to contribute to the policy framing of the Indian Prime Minister's initiative PM WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface).

India is making rapid strides towards establishing country-wide, high-speed networks to realize the Government of India's ambitious vision through the Digital India initiative. GUNI's partnership with Vubiq is extremely crucial at this stage considering it is a national priority. R&D carried out by this test bed facility will also be helpful to other tropical countries.

Testing the limits of the E-Band spectrum in Dana Point

HaulPass E10g millimeter wave link spans 3 km

To test the limits of the E-Band millimeter wave communications spectrum under various weather and environmental conditions, Vubiq Networks has installed a 3 kilometer (1.9 mile) wireless link in Southern California from the San Juan Capistrano Hills to the Dana Point Harbor. The test link consists of a pair of HaulPass E10g 10 Gbps radios communicating over the 80 GHz E-Band spectrum. To further test the performance and reliability of the link, the line-of-sight path purposely passes through a grove of tall eucalyptus trees.

A second wireless link using the V-Band is daisy chained to the E10g link and delivers 10 Gbps connectivity across the harbor to the restaurant row. The second link consists of a pair of HaulPass V10g radios.

One of the biggest challenges for harbors all across the country involves fiber access and dedicated high-bandwidth backhaul to support 5G-like public internet access. This Vubiq Networks test installation demonstrates the ability to bring high-bandwidth connections to service harbor-front restaurants, hotels, shops and free public Wi-Fi.
